The Friday before spring break I met with my friend Jim Brett from Slow Food Western Slope at our garden at the Hotchkiss K8. 28 enthusiastic second graders were ready to seed out all the ingredients we would need for a healthy salad before school releases for summer on the 25th of May!

We amended the soil, talked about soil depth and importance of seed spacing. Mrs. Latourette brought spinach, radish, dill, salad mix seed and Jim donated Slow Food “Arc of Taste” golden beet and deer tongue lettuce seed. I brought some sweet spring turnip seed, too. I am always delighted and a little shocked to see how much kids enjoy these sweet little turnips! I’ll get the photos to prove it later…
